Annie Leibovitz, by far one of today’s greatest photographers, has definitely been in the spotlight lately. Not only has she published a new book, A Photographer’s Life: 1990-2005 (Random House) but last week a retrospective on her work opened at Brooklyn Museum to rave reviews. Encompassing not only her portrait photography from such various subjects as President Bush and Clinton to Jim Carey, Colin Powell and Chuck Close that she took for Vanity Fair and Vogue amongst others, the book and exhibit also show her personal side via pictures of her family and especially images of Susan Sontag her life partner who passed away in 2004. The beauty of Annie’s images is something that she holds in common with great photographers such as Robert Frank, which is her honesty. Even all made up her subjects feel candid, fresh and real, as if they are just being themselves. One of the signs of a great photographer is their relationship to their subject and how comfortable they make them feel when taking their picture. Not many photographers do it better then Annie. The book is available now at Amazon and other book stores. Her exhibit at Brooklyn Museum runs through January 21, 2007.
