This caught my eye right away when I saw it. Created for Mini’s 50th anniversary, I love the new designs of the Mini Concept although it does remind me of the Smart Roadster which itself looks like a Lotus and was out in Europe for a few years until they discontinued it 2005.

In an open letter to Nicolai Ouroussoff, Andrew Bernheimer challenges Ouroussoff to take a closer look at architect studios in New York City. This in response to an August 24th article in the New York Times entitled “As Heroes Disappear, the City Needs More” where Ouroussoff declares that New York is void of the same sort of “Heroes” of architecture that currently exist in Los Angeles and existed in the good old days of the New York Five. Bernheimer writes “If he does engage in this search, he will find that Gotham isn’t nearly as barren of the “heroes” he seeks. He would find practices and their principals exerting great influence over the current generation of architects and even more sway upon the students of the next generation.” For more: DO: An Open Letter to Nicolai Ouroussoff
I know some of us are getting a little overwhelmed by stories about Zaha Hadid but this project is pretty cool so I wanted to feature it. The city of Chicago is celebrating the 100 years of the Burnham Plan which was the blueprint for urban design in the city. The first was a pavillion by UNSTUDIO.

Here is a great tidbit by way of Arch Daily. Jacques Ferrier Architects were selected for their design of the French Pavilion for the Shanghai Expo. They call it “The Sensual City” and it includes a “floating” French garden in its center. For more: French Pavilion for Shanghai Expo 2010 | ArchDaily.
Calling all Comic book creators! You want to be featured in an exhibition in one of the most prestigious museums in America? Well, here is your chance! In a contest they just announced, LACMA, is calling for original ideas for an L.A.-set comic book storyline featuring an original superhero or a villain. The winner will be featured in the upcoming “Heroes and Villains: The Battle for Good in India’s Comics,” which opens in the fall. According to Culture Monster, their goal is to “engage the large community of illustrators and designers who are attached to the comic book industry in L.A. and to provide students from the local art schools with a dialogue with the museum.”

Correction: Please note that the best entries will be posted on their Unframed blog on October 19, the first week the show is open. They will not be featured in the Heroes and Villains exhibition as mentioned.
LOT-EK wins the competition for the revamping of Pier 57 on 15th street and the west side highway. Once rumored to have been purchased by Cipriani with a new Ferrari dealership as part of the plan, this design was chosen by the Hudson River Park Trust and the local community board because of its “emphasis on the arts and innovative mix of uses.” For More: ArchNews: LOT-EK Lands Pier 57

The Rubik’s Cube has confounded us for years. Maybe the sandwich version of this puzzling brain teaser will do the same. The Rubix Cubewich contains cubes of pastrami, kielbasa, pork fat, salami, and two types of cheddar.
Here is a great website that takes the art of the sandwich to a whole new level!
